William Fox-Pitt suffered a head trauma after falling at the 2015 World Young Horse Championships in Le Lion-d'Angers, France. He spent a month in an induced coma in a French hospital before continuing his rehabilitation at a hospital in Dorset, England. Doctors told him he could return to competition in March 2016. "I remember very little of the fall, which is a good thing. During my recovery I realised that I might never compete again and asked myself if I wanted to do it. But I've put that thought out of my head and it's onwards and upwards." (bbc.co.uk, 23 Mar 2016; derbyhouse.co.uk, 22 Mar 2016; bbc.co.uk, 19 Oct 2015)

In 2015, dressage rider Rodolpho Riskalla contracted life-threatening meningococcal meningitis. A bacterial form of meningitis, it is a serious infection of the thin lining that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Despite amputation of both feet, and losing all the fingers of his right hand, and some fingers from his left hand, Riskalla returned to the saddle on January 2, 2016, less than five months after falling ill.
