Continuous droughts and ongoing internal warfare in Afghanistan make it a challenging country for animal charities to accomplish much. However, since 2008, Brooke, the world’s largest international equine welfare charity, has been committed to helping the country's 1.7 million working horses and donkeys with a primary focus on improving animal welfare through changes in human behavior.

Three annual scholarships will be distributed in 2017. Preference will be given to eligible, full-time, post-secondary students whose studies have emphasis on the horse, agriculture, agri-business or equine veterinary medicine.  

For 2017, the three scholarship awards offered are:

Painter Felice House created her series, Re-Western, as a reimagining of favourite Western movies, in response to her frustration at the gender division typically seen in Western films. In her work, the accomplished figurative painter features female leads in the roles traditionally filled by male cowboys such as Clint Eastwood and John Wayne.

It often seems like sentences for animal cruelty are never enough, which is why this ruling on a breeder from Armstrong, BC is a welcome result. “I believe that it sends a clear message that the courts and society will not tolerate animal cruelty,” says Kathy Woodward with the BC SPCA.

The oldest DNA ever sequenced came from the frozen remains of a horse more than half a million years old discovered in Canada’s west-central Yukon Territory. Thought to be an impossible project even by the coordinator, Dr. Ludovic Orlando of the University of Copenhagen, one of the many revelations included that the shared ancestors of all horses, donkeys and zebras lived more than four million years ago.
