As I learn about para-equestrianism and work with people with disabilities in my own fitness training practice, I never cease to be humbled and impressed by the sheer athletic spirit I encounter: discipline, determination, winning attitude, and pure hard work. When I look at athletes for examples we can all learn from, it’s hard to miss noticing the achievements of our Canadian Paralympians.

Wrapping up the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018 (WEG) with this fourth report, it’s been almost two weeks of ups and downs and bumps in the road, starting with Hurricane Florence bearing down on the Tryon International Equestrian Center as the 13-day event began on September 11.

At Tryon 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games - Welcome to our third report on the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018 (WEG) currently underway in Mill Spring, North Carolina. The 13-day event, which began on September 11, has seen more than its share of challenges due to Hurricane Florence, and on September 15, two horses pulled up lame during the Mars-sponsored cross-country phase of the three-day event competition and received immediate veterinary treatment.

Therapeutic horse riding may be used in the management of various anxiety disorders. But little is known about how these programs affect the stress levels in horses. A University of Missouri study has revealed that horses ridden by veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) did not have undue physiological stress responses, nor did they exhibit behavioural stress while participating in a veterans’ therapy program.

Meet your Canadian Equestrian Team athletes heading to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, September 7 to 18. The all-female team includes two Paralympic veterans and two athletes making their debut in Rio. At 33 years of age, Robyn Andrews is making her debut at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. She hails from St. John’s NF, and will be competing on Fancianna.
