In 1976, John Phillips took over the RCMP’s breeding farm in Pakenham, Ontario to help produce horses for the renowned Musical Ride. The farm produces 15-20 horse a year, only six of which would be selected for the traveling equestrian show impressing audiences around the world.
Phillips, who grew up on a dairy farm and always had a passion for horses, took a job with the Musical Ride after multiple offers thinking it would last just a year; that year turned into four decades and included many highlights like breeding a mare for Queen Elizabeth.
While he admits he will miss breeding the foals specifically for the Musical Ride he says it's time to retire. "I have other projects. I do have horses also, and I do compete. And I have students. So I'm not really out of horses," Philips said.
