Focus on Professionalism and Standards - On October 27, the University of Guelph held its third annual Equine Industry Symposium in which horse enthusiasts from all backgrounds in the industry set their sights on issues in our highly diverse $19 billion industry. The symposium was organized by Equine Management students in the Bachelor of Bio-Resource Management degree at the University of Guelph, and they chose professionalism and standards as the focus of a community-wide discussion for the day-long event.

The all-female team includes two Paralympic veterans and two athletes making their debut in Rio. At 33 years of age, Robyn Andrews is making her debut at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. She hails from St. John’s NF, and will be competing on Fancianna.

On September 22 - 25, 2016, draft horses and mules from all across North America will meet at the Bonner County Fairgrounds in Sandpoint, Idaho for the 40th Annual North Idaho Draft Horse and Mule show. Competition will run from the afternoon of Thursday, September 22 right through Sunday, September 25 with a range of classes showcasing the talents of these wonderful equines and their people.

Few bulls show signs of stress or anxiety just before bucking performance - A new study by a renowned animal welfare and behaviour expert at the University of Calgary looks at the stress levels of bucking bulls at the Calgary Stampede. The study — the first to examine the handling of bucking bulls before a rodeo performance — found that few bulls show signs of stress or anxiety. “The major conclusion of our study was that at this specific rodeo, the majority of bulls did not show behavioural indicators of fear prior to the performance,” says Dr. Ed Pajor, professor in animal behaviour and welfare at the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) and Anderson-Chisholm Chair in Animal Care and Welfare. “The evidence does not support concerns that bulls were agitated prior to performance.”

The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the global governing body for equestrian sport, announced on June 6, 2016, that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Olympic Channel. The FEI is one of 27 International Federations to have signed an agreement with the IOC to work together to bring sport to a massively increased television audience worldwide.
