We publish Canada’s leading general-interest horse magazine, a national consumers’ guide for the horse industry, and Canada’s leading equine website. Our publications have set the standard for quality, value, and service to the horse industry since 1991. Location: Sidney, BC 

BOOKKEEPER
Publishing office, 30 Hours a Week

Anticipated Start Date: October 29, 2014

Duties will include but may not be limited to:

  • Maintain the financial records using bookkeeping software;
  • Reconcile various accounts and post journal entries on a regular basis;
  • Maintain ledgers and prepare all financial statements;
  • Prepare invoices and collect accounts receivables;
  • Carry out calculations for preparing the cheques for taxes, accounts payables, and payroll;
  • Prepare the documentation for filing taxes and submitting tax payment forms;
  • Prepare all financial, statistical, and accounting reports;
  • Maintain and manage data for human resources;
  • Other related duties as assigned or requested by the publisher.

Required Skills and Abilities:

The successful applicant will have the following essential skills and experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years bookkeeping experience spanning at least one full fiscal period;
  • Education in bookkeeping and/or accounting;
  • Experience using the Intuit QuickBooks program;
  • Good arithmetic skills;
  • Excellent data management skills;
  • Experience and fluency in Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Good keyboarding skills, both speed and accuracy;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent attention to detail, and highly organized.

If you are a positive self-starter who enjoys a busy work environment and can effectively self-supervise, multi-task and handle changing priorities, you will enjoy this position. You must be honest, responsible, care about quality and service, thrive in a busy environment, and always be willing to help in other areas as needed. Training and ongoing support is provided.

Knowledge of horses and the horse industry is an asset but not essential. You should enjoy dogs as an office dog is present.

ASSISTANT EDITOR
Publishing office, 25-40 Hours a Week
                         
Anticipated Start Date: Immediately

Job Description & Skills Required:
This position requires professional writing and editing skills for print and online, a good general knowledge of horses, and at least two years of recent horse experience.
We are seeking a mature, reliable team player who is able to self-supervise and handle changing priorities. You should be honest and responsible. You should be passionate about horses, magazines, and the quality of your work. You must be willing to pitch in and help in other areas, and attend trade shows and events as needed.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Writing and editing of feature articles, news pieces, show reports, marketing material, and other items for print and web
  • Research and story development, including interviews
  • Fact checking and proof reading
  • Critically assessing contributed material for quality and content
  • Working with freelance writers, coordinating and assigning stories
  • Assist with marketing and promotion for all platforms including print, website, and social media
  • Administrative assistance and support to Editor/Publisher
  • Supporting the entire website and magazine production cycle

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Possess an excellent command of English language, both written and oral
  • Be honest, reliable, accountable, flexible, organized, self-supervised, motivated, friendly, positive, supportive
  • Possess excellent keyboarding and strong computer skills with the ability to learn new programs
  • Must have initiative and good time management
  • Post-secondary education in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with and knowledge of horses and the horse industry
  • Occasional weekend and evening work on deadlines is required
  • Be able to professionally represent the magazine at trade shows and other events
  • Must enjoy dogs (an office dog works here)

The successful candidate will work within our office and learn all about the role of media and marketing in the horse industry. Training and ongoing support is provided. Knowledge of horses and the horse industry is essential. Must enjoy dogs as an office dog is present. This position is not commission-based.
