JJ’s Place: Retirement Horse Boarding on Vancouver Island
By Margaret Evans
Nestled among the trees on the outskirts of Coombs, British Columbia, is a new rest home for horses. JJ’s Place is a special boarding facility offering a clean, safe, serene and peaceful place where horses that have been injured, are aging, or in retirement can rest or live out their years comfortably and in the care of attentive staff.
The barn contains seven 11-feet by 12-feet generously bedded rubber-matted boarding stalls, available for full, semi-full, or self boarding services. Boarding fees are extremely reasonable ranging from $250 plus GST for self-boarding to $500 plus GST for full board. Cross-ties are installed in the walkway and each stall has a large attached in/out sand paddock accessible at all times unless otherwise instructed. The property is served by filtered, UV protected well water which is tested annually, and the land is extremely well drained. For a change of pace, trails are just minutes away.
Horses receive 24-hour on-site care including individualized feeding programs, supplements and medications as directed by each owner. Daily turnout is on eight-plus acres of pasture and every horse receives a weekly grooming and body assessment. Basic first aid is given as required.
This is a beautiful, quiet place for horses that need a non-stressful environment for rehab or, toward the end of their lives, need specific age-related care and attention as they ease into old age.
The facility is run by a retired nurse who graduated from Kwantlen College Equine Studies Program. As a horse owner, she has 36 years of experience and is devoted to quality horse care.
