MEALS ON HOOVES

By Dave Stark

The Langley Meals on Wheels (MOW) Society, working with Rick Green, Mayor of the Township of Langley, celebrated World Food Day on Friday, October 16, 2009, with the mayor delivering meals on horseback to the elderly and food insecure in Langley, BC.

The theme of this year’s World Food Day is “Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis.” The goal of the Meals on Hooves event was to raise awareness of the MOW service in Langley and to encourage people and communities to become more food secure by eating local, nutritious foods, and by supporting sustainable agriculture. Over ten percent of Canadians are food insecure.

Through this unique event, Langley MOW also hoped to promote and celebrate the strong rural and historic nature of Langley, as well as acknowledge the large and vibrant equine sector within the “Horse Capital” of BC.
