FIRST AUSTRALIAN STOCK HORSE IN CANADIAN COW HORSE COMPETITION
By Jacquie McArthur
Cadabra, the first Australian Stock Horse (ASH) stallion in Canada, just competed for his first time overseas on the last weekend in May, 2009 in Clarseholm, Alberta. It was the first time an ASH bred horse has ever competed in North America in a Cow Horse event. The event was offered by the Alberta Reined Cow Horse Association (ARCHA) as one of it’s regular spring events.
It was undeniable as Cadabra and his rider Maryanne entered the arena that neither horse or rider were new to the show ring. Both displayed their talents, charisma, and abilities, quickly drawing the attention and support of the crowd. The duo placed second in a field of 12 competitors completing both pattern and fence work, proving the breed’s cow ability, athletic abilities, and quiet temperament. Attending participants and spectators alike offered support to Maryanne and Cadabra with an old-fashioned welcome of whistles and applause during their weekend of competition. Support continued after the event with kind words and congratulations to their new visiting members from Australia.
