HGA Buffer

Hindgut acidosis is a digestive, health-related issue in horses, especially those fed large amounts of starchy processed grain. A high grain diet for a horse combined with hard work and stress can produce a high amount of acidity. As acidity rises, the pH level lowers and this can lead to horses developing anorexia, colic, or display stereotypical behaviours such as wood chewing and stall weaving. Long term exposure to low pH levels (below 5.8) can affect the epithelial lining of the colonic and cecal walls that can influence absorption capacity.

To normalize pH levels and treat or prevent hind gut acidity, First Place Feeds has developed a buffer which can be added to the feed ration.
