Little Mare
By Sasha Hopp, of Penticton, BC
“A mare?” they said...
“Oh, who would want one of those?”
But I knew.
“A mare? Nothing but trouble.”
“Cranky,” they said.
But I knew.
I saw your beautiful eyes.
Saw myself reflected in them.
Scared... unsure... distrustful.
Questioning.
And then you were mine.
My first horse.
That winter...
A long, cold, scary winter.
You looked at me with those eyes...
And I knew.
You wanted to love me
And I wanted to love you
The affair began.
Little mare,
You tried so hard!
You poured your heart into
everything
And I poured my heart into you.
Under those dark, cold skies
You trusted me.
And I knew.
“Try this.”
“Are you sure?”
“You’ll be okay”
“Do you promise?”
“I promise. Go ahead, you can do it.”
I still don’t know whose voice it was, little mare...
Yours or mine.
Warm days
Now the sun sets late
And glistens off your buttercream coat.
You look at me with liquid eyes.
Sure... trusting... happy.
And I know.
