HONOURABLE
MENTION
Bariton
By Sydney Holme, of North Saanich, BC
Sunlight hits the shoulder of the powerful animal beneath you, shining
brilliantly.
The steady rhythm of his breathing collides with the noise of
compacted hooves reaching deep into the gritty sand.
Strength seeps through every pore of his body, sending sweat flying.
You move with him, guide him, but feel as though you are hindering his
beauty, his movement.
Stepping sideways, gliding in slow, strong arches.
All the instruction located beneath tall leather boots, muscles
straining and pushing.
Sand sprays as legs soar across the ring, pulling back, showing
restraint and grace.
Froth and lather making a once polished look fade, to add hard work and
determination.
Bending, changing, sweeping around turns.
When no energy remains in the magnificent creature you dismount.
Your feet touch the ground with a sharp tingle, jolting you back to
reality.
The intensity you once contained underneath yourself flows into the
earth, lost once again.
Your now seemingly lifeless form remains beside the imperial outline of
your horse.
