HONOURABLE MENTION

A Friend Like No Other
By Katlyn Derkacz, of Winnipeg, Manitoba

I once had a friend
Not one with voice, or hands, or feet
But one of hooves, muzzle, and tail

He was always there
Even when it seemed the world turned upside down

The friendship he provided
Could not be matched with anything
He had to say nothing
Just to listen to what I had to say
He would always understand

I always thought he’d be here
But the years went on
And he started to draw away from me

The vet visits started to pile up
And he started not to move
But he never stopped listening

I knew it would soon be time
To say goodbye

But he held on
Maybe to experience a little more of life
Or maybe to be with me longer

But, eventually the dreaded day came
Saying goodbye was like a thousand knives poking at my heart
But I knew he would always be there
Listening to what I had to say

Because he was my friend
A friend like no other
