My
Dream Mare
By Alesia Willard, of Nanoose Bay, BC,
age 16
The day it all happened still seems like a dream,
Though it actually occurred sooner than it may seem.
A small black mare, a personality so sweet,
A horse like her simply can’t be beat.
Just like the wind she is wild and untamed,
Mina, meaning Mine in Swedish is her name.
With a long black mane and a silky black tail,
I know that her love will never fail.
Her movement is so graceful like walking on air,
She is everything you’d ever want in a mare.
So I take her home and put her away,
Make sure she’s cozy with lots of water and hay.
She walks to the fence and sniffs our old mare,
The mare turns away as if she doesn’t care.
Mina’s soon nickering back to our colt and our filly,
And if you think horses can’t talk then you are quite silly.
In only three weeks’ time she can be haltered and led.
She is learning well and fast like I’d always said.
As time continues to quickly pass by,
The wild black mare is not nearly so shy.
By month two of Mina’s bright new start,
You’d very rarely ever see the two of us apart.
Month three rolls around and what do ya know?
She’s so saddle broke she could star in a show!
But as month three begins to slowly slip by,
She is fatter than ever, and I wonder why.
Could she be carrying a foal so dainty and small?
Oh wouldn’t that just be the best gift of all!
Could it be a colt or maybe a filly?
Would wishing for twins sound a bit silly?
Maybe there’s no foal and she’s just really fat,
Well, I wouldn’t really know what to think about that!
But foal or no foal I don’t really care,
As long as I’ve got my amazing black dream mare!
